Beyond leading a Gulf States recall of ambassadors to Qatar, why has Riyadh branded as terrorist organisations both the Doha-backed Muslim Brotherhood as well as the Iraq and Syria-based Sunni radical of Al Nusra Front and Isis. François Picard’s panel argues over the timing, what with a possible détente between the West and Shiite Iran and the U-S president’s visit to Riyadh later this month.

The US and Russia came together in Paris at a conference in Lebanon, where the spillover from the Syria war means at least a million refugees have crossed the border. Adding to that, tensions among Gulf states over Islamist rebels in Syria. François Picard and his panel look at whether the standoff over Ukraine will change Moscow’s stance on Syria and what impact Gulf tensions are having on those in Syria and Lebanon.

France 24, thursday 23th january 2014

Syrian peace talks are underway in Switzerland, and already it’s fair to assume that after Geneva 2, there will be a Geneva 3, and perhaps even Geneva 4. Damascus’ top backer Iran was uninvited, and Bashar al-Assad shows no sign of being ready to step down. In fact, fighting on the ground has actually intensified, with jihadists making it a three-way fight. So what’s the point in these talks?
